DA Takes Minister Lindiwe Zulu to Human Rights Commission Over Sassa Crisis
They have decided to report the Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, to the South African Human Rights Commission (HRC). This move is in response to what the DA sees as negligence on the part of Minister Zulu in safeguarding the socio-economic rights of Sassa beneficiaries in the Western Cape.
Complaints of Sassa Beneficiaries
Sassa beneficiaries in the Western Cape have been facing significant challenges, with numerous complaints pouring in from all corners of the province. These beneficiaries are struggling to access their funds from ATMs and retailers due to technical glitches on the side of the Post Bank. Wendy Kaizer-Philander, the DA’s Chief Whip in the Western Cape Parliament, highlights the gravity of the situation.
Technical Errors and Inaccessibility
The technical errors primarily affect Sassa beneficiaries with gold cards, who have been left without access to their vital social security benefits. Although the Postbank has advised these cardholders to use South African Post Offices for their allowances, this solution is far from ideal.
Many Post Office branches in the Western Cape have shut down, leaving only a few operational ones. Consequently, these operational branches are overwhelmed, forcing beneficiaries to endure long journeys to access their much-needed support.
Government Efforts Hampered
Wendy Kaizer-Philander stresses that while the Western Cape government is consistently striving to alleviate social and economic pressures faced by its residents, these efforts are constantly thwarted by incompetence at the national government level.
DA Determination
The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape remains unwavering in its commitment to address this pressing issue. Their ultimate goal is to hold Minister Zulu accountable for her alleged failure to support the residents of the Western Cape.
