NSFAS covers accommodation for students who live near or on campus if they have successfully applied for funding. You can check whether an accommodation is accredited by NSFAS by following these steps

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is a government-funded program that provides financial aid to students going to tertiary institutions. Undergraduate students from poor or working-class backgrounds are eligible to apply.

Student allowances are provided by NSFAS to cover registration, tuition, food, learning materials, and accommodations.

Amounts allocated for accommodation for TVET colleges and Universities are as follows:

  • Accommodation in an peri-urban area R18 900 per annum
  • Accommodation in an rural area R15 750 per annum

University

  • As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)

NSFAS does not pay for private accommodation unless it is accredited by the organization. You can check if your accommodation is NSFAS accredited on the website of your tertiary education institution.

It will indicate which accommodations are available on campus as well as which nearby residences are associated with the tertiary institution. It is most likely that nearby residences associated with tertiary education institutions are accredited by NSFAS.
