Shoprite has developed a new grant collection method as one of Sassa’s selected retail outlets to reduce the burden of waiting in long queues when collecting social grants.

Over time, Sassa has worked to make its beneficiaries’ access to social grant payments as convenient as possible. Among them are ATMs, Postbank and till points at retail outlets such as Shoprite Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay and Boxer.

In addition, Shoprite Checkers is now allowing grant beneficiaries to receive their grant payments through the retailer’s Money Market Account. Shoprite’s Money Market Account is a low-cost transactional bank account that lets you buy airtime and electricity, pay in-store and send or receive Money Market Account Stamps.

Shoprite’s Money Market Account is free for beneficiaries with gold cards that are about to expire. The following steps can be used to open a Money Market account:

How To Open A Shoprite Money Market Account

  • To register, dial 1203534# OR WhatsApp 087 240 5709 OR visit the in-store Money Market counter or download the Shoprite app.
  • Download your Bank Confirmation Letter by signing in.
  • You can download the SASSA form here or pick one up at any Shoprite or Checkers supermarket’s Money Market counter.
  • Go to your nearest SASSA office with your printed Bank Confirmation Letter, SASSA switch form, and original ID.

Upon receiving their first SASSA grant of R800 or more, grant recipients will receive up to R100 in Shoprite vouchers. Money Market Accounts offer the following benefits:

  • There are no monthly fees. Cash withdrawals cost clients only R5. Unlike other South African bank accounts, all other transactions are free.
  • SMS notifications and real-time balance enquiries on the phone give clients full control over their money.
  • Shoprite, Checkers, and Usave supermarkets nationwide have more than 25 000 till points where you can deposit and withdraw cash without long queues or high fees.
  • From their phones, clients can send money, buy airtime, data, or electricity, send grocery vouchers, pay bills, and buy groceries.
  • You do not need a bank account to open a Money Market Account. Money can be loaded into your account at Shoprite, Checkers, Usave or K’nect at the cashier or at the Money Market.
