Teaching and learning have been disrupted across Mpumalanga province due to major issues. The issues have been discussed by a number of stakeholders.

In South Africa, education is a basic right, but recent protests in Mpumalanga have damaged infrastructure and disrupted education. The community, political leaders, and teachers’ unions have met to discuss these challenges.

As a result of protests in the province, learners have lost hours of learning that they can’t make up. It is usually the school that takes the blame when learners fail. In Kanyamazane, the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education held public hearings on the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill.

“We must fight for our schools. Education must be fought for. This is very important to us,” said Thea Rix, DA ward councillor.

Public input has been sought on the situation. As a result, the clauses in the bill will be aligned with new educational developments.

The Portfolio Committee has processed submissions from community members to parliament. Parliamentary oral submissions have also been processed. Public comments will now be sought by the Portfolio Committee.

Input from various provinces will be discussed by the Portfolio Committee and presented to parliament. Before they are adopted or rejected, these issues will be discussed in depth.
