Sassa Faces Allegations of Deceptive Practices Amidst Claims of Unrestored Services
Sassa Faces Allegations of Deceptive Practices Amidst Claims of Unrestored Services. In a recent turn of events, South Africa’s Postbank announced what many had eagerly awaited on September 6. The institution disclosed that it had made significant progress in addressing the technical issues that had intermittently affected the ability of South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) social grants recipients to make withdrawals through ATMs and Post Office branches.
Sassa Faces Allegations of Deceptive Practices Amidst Claims of Unrestored Services
Postbank’s spokesperson, Bongani Diako, issued a statement encouraging beneficiaries who had attempted withdrawals since September 5 to exercise patience. Diako stated, “It is expected that the funds will be credited back to all beneficiaries’ accounts within the next 24 hours.”
Beneficiaries Express Frustration Over Unreceived Grants
Despite the optimistic announcement, a number of beneficiaries claim that they have not yet received their grants. Among these individuals is a woman who has been anxiously waiting for her 89-year-old mother’s old-age pension to be disbursed, but to no avail.
In a rather pointed statement, she declared, “It’s all lies. I have been monitoring her bank balance, and no funds have been deposited. Moreover, the queues at Post Offices are interminable, with pensioners in distress over their missing funds. The Post Office itself appears to be devoid of funds.”
Accusations of Deception and Media Manipulation
She went on to accuse Sassa of misleading the public about the situation and using the media to salvage their reputation. She firmly stated, “The narratives they fed you about resolving the issue are false. I’ve visited stores, the Post Office, and ATMs, but there’s still no sign of the money.
My mother is extremely elderly and continues to wait. I’ve had to bring her back home, as she simply cannot endure standing in line day after day for nothing.”
Public Outrage on Social Media
The frustration extends beyond just one individual. On September 11, a user on Twitter commented on a post by Sassa, revealing, “Took pensioners to a Sassa office and they told them to take 3 months of bank statements and go to the Post Office Bank. The Post Office bank can’t help. They are just saying they have significant technical problems.”
Several other users on the Elon Musk-owned platform expressed their discontent with the situation:
- “Does the President know that SA has let down old-age pensioners and they haven’t been paid September pensions?”
- “People are feeding Sassa pensioners here by me who can’t access their cash. Where is the FF+ (Freedom Front Plus) and the hundreds of other political parties? You can all take your silence and go yourselves.”
Sassa responded to some of these comments by stating, “If you have been following the official Sassa pages, there have been updates, explanations, and apologies regarding the issue.”
As the situation unfolds, beneficiaries continue to demand answers and transparency from Sassa regarding the delayed disbursement of social grants.
