Earlier this week, beneficiaries voiced their concerns on social media due to non-receipt of their grants. The agency clarified, “From August 25 to 31, payments for approved clients will be processed. Clients are advised to check the SRD website during this period to ascertain the exact date their payment will be credited to their bank accounts.”

Once the payment is processed, it will take approximately two to three business days for the funds to appear in the beneficiary’s account.Paseka Letsatsi, the spokesperson for Sassa, in an interview with Newzroom Afrika, mentioned that the agency is gearing up to ensure timely payouts. He acknowledged a backlog that resulted in the postponement of grant payments, explaining, “Every month, we evaluate applicants to ensure their eligibility remains unchanged.”

For beneficiaries who face challenges in collecting their payments, Sassa recommended the appointment of a procurator.

Understanding the Role of a Procurator

A procurator is an individual authorized to collect the grant on a beneficiary’s behalf.The agency elaborated, “Beneficiaries must officially appoint the procurator.

Through a sworn statement, the procurator is obligated to verify the accuracy of the information and ensure the collected money reaches the beneficiary. If beneficiaries can’t visit the local Sassa office, the procurator can apply on their behalf.”

Procurator Eligibility Criteria

To act as a procurator, one must:

• Be at least 18 years old;
• Hold permanent residency in South Africa;
• Not be an unrehabilitated insolvent;
• Express willingness to represent the beneficiary;
• Possess a valid 13-digit South African ID;
• Provide a life certificate for the beneficiary;
• Ensure the beneficiary has no outstanding debts with the procurator;
• Not represent more than five beneficiaries;
• Furnish an affidavit confirming the collected funds will be handed over to the beneficiary;
• Submit identity documents of both the beneficiary and the appointee.
