Sassa collaborates with medical contracted doctors who play a crucial role in determining eligibility for disability grants. These medical professionals work under the supervision and guidelines approved by both Sassa and the Department of Health.
Assessment and Requirements
The assessment process conducted by Sassa medical contracted doctors is based on the information presented by the applicant, and a physical assessment is also carried out. To qualify for a disability grant, applicants must meet several requirements, including:
- Being a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee permanently residing in South Africa.
- Falling within the age range of 18 to 59.
- Undergoing a medical or functional assessment confirming disability.
- Providing clinical information or a referral form confirming disability.
- Offering a referral form duly completed by a treating facility or practitioner if previously rejected on medical grounds.
- Undergoing a Means Test, including the applicant and their spouse.
- Not being maintained or cared for in a State-funded institution.
- Not receiving another social grant for themselves.
- Submitting a 13-digit bar-coded identity document or a smart ID card for both the applicant and their spouse. In cases where these forms of identification are unavailable, an alternative prescribed by Sassa will be accepted.
