Funding for TVET Students Affected by NSFAS Has Been Restored. Due to mismatched qualification codes, NSFAS funding was unfairly denied to some TVET College students enrolled in National Certificate (Vocational) [NC(V)] programmes. Funding will resume shortly after the issue has been resolved.

NSFAS confirmed delays in bursary disbursements due to discrepancies in qualification codes for two NC(V) programmes. Financial aid was not available to eligible students due to these technical errors.

A fix was implemented after NSFAS investigated the problem. The results of 80% of the affected students were released to exam centers on 2 April 2025, according to Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Nobuhle Nkabane.

For NC(V) Levels 2 to 4, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) also collected supporting evidence. Umalusi is scheduled to receive this documentation by May 5, 2025. Upon verification and approval, the remaining results will be released on May 9 and 12.

Funding for NSFAS will resume

NSFAS is now able to release funding to the students whose qualification code mismatch was corrected.

Minister Nkabane said the affected students will receive their NSFAS funds without further delay.

Working with all affected students and stakeholders during this process has been a pleasure. I appreciate their patience and understanding. All eligible students will receive their results and funding promptly, as we remain committed to doing so.

How students should proceed

In case of delay, students are encouraged to:

  1. Confirm whether their results have been released with their exam centers.
  2. Updates on funding can be found via their NSFAS portal or institutional account.
  3. If no progress has been made by mid-May, they should contact their TVET college or NSFAS.

DHET says it remains committed to resolving administrative issues that impede academic progress and student funding. It is believed that this resolution will restore confidence in the NSFAS system and ensure that no eligible student is left out.

For qualifying students enrolled at TVET colleges and universities, NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans. This includes tuition, registration, and allowances for food, lodging, and learning materials.

Conclusion

NSFAS funding has been restored for affected TVET college students after resolving qualification code issues. With results released and verifications underway, eligible students can now expect timely financial aid, reaffirming NSFAS commitment to accessible, equitable education in South Africa.
