New Leadership in Corporate Communications
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has named Ishmael Mnisi as the new Senior Manager of Corporate Communications and the spokesperson for the financial aid schemes. Mnisi brings with him twenty-three years of experience in the communication industry, having previously served as the spokesperson for Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.
Responsibilities and Expectations
Mnisi’s role encompasses managing public relations campaigns, implementing brand strategies, overseeing digital communication, content development, and publications. Additionally, he will handle media engagement, reputation management, community outreach, public education, and internal communication. The NSFAS board expresses confidence that Mnisi’s extensive experience will enhance the scheme’s relationships with stakeholders.
NSFAS 2024 Applications Now Open
As NSFAS welcomes its new communications leader, the organization has also announced the opening of the 2024 application cycle. NSFAS provides funding for over one million students in approved courses at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and universities.
Comprehensive Bursaries and Application Details
NSFAS-funded students receive comprehensive bursaries covering tuition, registration fees, and various allowances, including accommodation, meals, stationery, and transport. Notably, students living at home receive a transport allowance instead of accommodation, while those in catered accommodation do not receive a meal allowance.
Application Period and Criteria
The 2024 NSFAS application period has commenced, albeit later than usual to align with the completion of the SARS tax period. This delay allows NSFAS to access updated information submitted by applicants. To be eligible for NSFAS, applicants must be South African, enrolled in an approved course, and not exceed the household income threshold.
Final Words
Applicants’ household income must not exceed R350,000, with a higher threshold of R600,000 for disabled students. Verification of household income against the latest SARS data is part of the application process. Students have until 31 January 2024 to submit their NSFAS online applications, providing a window of just over two months to apply for these valuable bursaries.
