Students have been able to pursue their studies thanks to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Regarding the allowances that students receive, the Higher Education Minister addressed an important issue.
Nsfas Allowances Are Meant For Educational Purposes Nzimande
Student who are not able to afford their education are eligible for government funding through the NSFAS.In a recent announcement, Minister of Higher Education and Training, Science and Innovation, Dr. Blade Nzimande, announced:
As well, NSFAS is not a social grant, but rather an education grant that must be used exclusively for educational purposes.There is government funding for tuition fees, personal care, transportation, and accommodations.
University Allowances:
- Costs of university residence must not exceed costs of private accommodation charged by the university.
- Annual transportation fee (up to 40 km from institution): R7 500
- Allowance for living expenses: R15 000 a year
- A book allowance of R5200 per year is provided
- Students living in catered residences are entitled to R2 900 per year as an incidental/personal care allowance
TVET College allowances:
- Annual rent for urban accommodation: R24 000
- Accommodation in an peri-urban area: R18 900 per annum
- Accommodation in an rural area: R15 750 per annum
- Transport (up to 40 km from institution): R7 350 per annum
- Transport: R7 000 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance: R2900 per annum
The Department of Higher Education and Training allocated R47.3 billion to Nsfas for the 2022 academic year, according to Nzimande. Both TVET colleges and public universities are expected to receive funding under this program in 2022
