Nsfas Appeal Portal Now Active

Over 1.6 million funding applications were received for the 2023 academic year through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). The amount of bursary funding approved for 2023 was 941,491.

According to the financial aid scheme, 317,335 bursary applications were unsuccessful. Accordingly, NSFAS deemed the unsuccessful applicants ineligible for funding.

The appeal function has now been activated on the myNsfas portal, Nsfas has announced. Applicants rejected by the financial aid scheme will be able to submit an appeal and possibly receive funding for the 2023 academic year by using this feature.

How to appeal using myNSFAS portal

The NSFAS appeal functionality is available on the myNSFAS portal. “Applicants with unsuccessful applications can submit an appeal application through their myNSFAS account using the required information and documents,” stated the financial aid scheme.

Successful bursary applicants are reminded that appeals must be filed within 30 days of the unsuccessful status appearing. The myNsfas portal is the only place to submit appeals. In a warning to applicants, Nsfas said they would not accept appeals submitted via email.

The rejection status of any student who exceeded N+2 or N+3 can be appealed.

A student has only N+2 years to complete his or her degree according to the N+2 rule. An “N” means that the qualification must be completed within a minimum number of years.Hence, Nsfas only funds a student for the amount of time it takes the student to complete a degree in four years.

Furthermore, students who need to redo certain subjects or modules will be funded for an additional two years.Students who are successful in their NSFAS appeal applications will receive comprehensive funding that covers all aspects of their tertiary education.

Tuition and accommodation fees are included in this amount. The students will also be eligible for several allowances to cover additional study-related costs.
