NSFAS Calls on Student Housing Providers to Submit Claims for R44m Shortfall

NSFAS Calls on Student Housing Providers to Submit Claims for R44m Shortfall. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged the Private Student Housing Association (PSHA) and other accommodation providers to submit their claims to resolve an outstanding R44 million payment shortfall. This shortfall has impacted student housing payments, causing concern among students and landlords alike. NSFAS emphasizes that payments will only be processed once accommodation is verified.
NSFAS Calls on Student Housing Providers to Submit Claims for R44m Shortfall
To address this financial discrepancy, NSFAS has called upon PSHA to submit a comprehensive list of affected accommodation providers and students. This initiative aims to ensure that eligible claims are processed promptly.
According to NSFAS:
- Payments for student housing will only be made upon receipt and verification of legitimate claims.
- Housing providers with outstanding claims for 2024 must submit their requests to the dedicated email: [email protected].
- New measures are being implemented this academic year to enhance transparency and efficiency in claims processing.
Impact on Students
PSHA has expressed concerns that without immediate payment, thousands of students may face eviction from their accommodations. The association provides housing for over 80,000 students, many of whom rely entirely on NSFAS funding to secure their living spaces.
University Housing and Student Registrations
Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)
CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley confirmed that student registration is progressing well, with over 80% of students securing their places. The allocation process for student residences is also moving efficiently, prioritizing first-year female students and those who applied on time. Walk-in students without prior applications are not being accommodated.
Stellenbosch University
Spokesperson Martin Viljoen stated that Stellenbosch University is prepared for the upcoming semester. University accommodations will be available for first-year students from Wednesday and Thursday, with classes set to begin on February 10.
University of the Western Cape (UWC)
UWC spokesperson Gasant Abarder reported a smooth registration process, with students accepting and declining offers in real time. The academic year is expected to commence on schedule, with no significant disruptions.
University of Cape Town (UCT)
UCT has received a total of 11,500 applications, including 7,000 returning students and 4,500 new first-year students. University housing placements are in progress, ensuring that students have adequate accommodation before classes resume.
Conclusion
NSFAS’ call for student housing providers to submit outstanding claims is a critical step in resolving the R44 million shortfall. The initiative ensures that students remain housed while universities continue their academic preparations. Stakeholders, including PSHA and other housing providers, are encouraged to act swiftly to prevent student displacement and maintain a smooth academic transition.
