Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, expressed confidence in the enhancements made by NSFAS to simplify the application process for students.

The NSFAS 2024 application period commenced on Tuesday, 21 November 2023, with Minister Nzimande urging all eligible students to seize the opportunity and apply for funding. The minister highlighted various improvements implemented by NSFAS, including the introduction of mobile applications aimed at streamlining the application process.
Enhanced Digital Experience for Applicants
As part of NSFAS’s digital strategy, the student application portal has been upgraded to provide a more user-friendly experience based on lessons learned from previous years. Students will also benefit from expanded options for checking NSFAS application status, with continued use of WhatsApp and USSD functionalities, offering increased accessibility.
Improved Status Tracking via WhatsApp and USSD
Applicants for the 2024 academic year can conveniently track their NSFAS application statuses and funding details through WhatsApp at 078 519 8006 and USSD at 12067327#. These functionalities, introduced in 2023, have been refined to include additional features such as confirmation of registration information.
NSFAS Launches Mobile Application for Seamless Applications
In a commendable move, NSFAS has introduced a mobile application for the 2024 application cycle, available on iOS, Android, and HUAWEI devices. Minister Nzimande praised this technological innovation, anticipating that the mobile app would simplify the application process for students. The mobile app is set to incorporate biometric capabilities later in the year.

Acknowledging challenges faced by students seeking assistance, Minister Nzimande has directed NSFAS to enhance the operations of its call center. Anticipating improvements before the academic year begins, the minister aims to address concerns raised by students struggling to access support.
NSFAS Funding Details and Eligibility Criteria
As of now, NSFAS supports over one million students in public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges. Eligible students can apply for NSFAS funding, with financial eligibility criteria for 2024 remaining unchanged.
Financial Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must not have a household income exceeding R350,000, while the limit for disabled students is R600,000. If approved, NSFAS covers tuition and registration fees, providing additional allowances to assist students with various study-related expenses.
