NSFAS Urges Exploited Students to Speak Up Against Abusive Landlords

NSFAS Urges Exploited Students to Speak Up Against Abusive Landlords. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has issued a strong warning to landlords exploiting students in exchange for accommodation, stating that such individuals will be blacklisted. This announcement follows alarming reports of a landlord targeting vulnerable students at eThekwini TVET College.
NSFAS Urges Exploited Students to Speak Up Against Abusive Landlords
NSFAS spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi confirmed that an investigation was conducted after receiving a complaint. However, it was later discovered that the student who lodged the complaint was not officially registered at the institution. This has complicated the verification process, making it difficult to take immediate action against the alleged perpetrator.
Despite repeated calls for affected students to come forward and report such incidents to the South African Police Service (SAPS), no formal cases have been recorded so far. Mnisi emphasized that if credible new information emerges, NSFAS is ready to reopen the investigation to ensure that justice is served.
Report Abuse and Harassment
NSFAS has urged any student experiencing harassment or exploitation to take action immediately. Victims should:
- Report the incident to SAPS and obtain an official case number.
- Inform NSFAS by emailing [email protected] so that necessary interventions can be implemented.
Mnisi reassured students that NSFAS is committed to protecting their rights and ensuring they have access to safe and fair accommodation options.
Conclusion
Student safety remains a top priority for NSFAS. The organization strongly encourages anyone facing harassment or unfair treatment to come forward and help put an end to exploitative practices. With strict blacklisting policies in place, NSFAS aims to create a secure living environment for students across South Africa.
