The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) administers the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, providing assistance to over 7.5 million eligible South Africans since May 2020. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s announcement in the Medium-Term Budget Speech extended the program with an additional R34 billion, pushing the grant’s end date to March 2025.
New Payment Structure for SRD Grant
Unlike Sassa’s permanent grants with fixed payment schedules, the R350 grant payments lacked specified dates until September. Monthly eligibility verification necessitated this approach. Payments are now made at the end of each month, starting from the 25th. However, with Christmas approaching, December payments will be processed earlier.
December Payment Dates
The last SRD grant payment for the year will be made from December 18 to 22. Recipients are advised to check their Sassa status on the SRD website during this payment week to confirm the exact deposit date. Beneficiaries should note that it takes two to three working days for funds to reflect in their accounts after processing.
Eligibility Criteria for SRD Grant
The Department of Social Development specifies that the SRD grant is available to South African citizens, refugees, asylum seekers, and special permit holders aged 18 to 60 with a monthly income below R624. Eligible individuals should lack sufficient means, not receive other social grants or UIF payments, and have no financial support from alternative sources.
Checking SRD Grant Application Status
Applicants can check their SRD grant application status online at sassa status check or by dialing 080 060 1011, providing their ID number.
Payment Collection Options
Sassa offers multiple options for R350 grant payment collection:
- Bank Account: Recipients can have the payment directly deposited into their bank accounts for prompt access.
- Cash Send: Individuals without a personal bank account can use Cash Send, requiring an ID number and phone number for access.
- Retail Stores: Various retail stores, including Pick n Pay, Checkers, Shoprite, and Boxer, facilitate R350 grant collection.
By providing clear information on payment dates, eligibility criteria, and collection options, beneficiaries can navigate the SRD grant process effectively.
