Throughout most of 2022 and 2023, Sassa did not disclose payment dates for the SRD grant. However, in August 2023, the agency began publishing payment dates for the relief grant, providing payment information until March 2024.
Applying for the SRD Grant and Verification Checks
Every month, more than 10 million people submit applications for the SRD grant, but only approximately 7 million individuals are approved for payment. Applicants can check the status of their SRD grant application through a Sassa Status Check. If the status is approved, beneficiaries will receive the R350 grant. If an application is rejected, applicants have the option to appeal to the Independent Tribunal For Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).
Payment Options and Locations
SRD Grant beneficiaries have flexibility in receiving their payments. They can choose to have their SRD grant deposited directly into their bank accounts. Alternatively, they can utilize the Postbank’s cash-send payment method or collect their grant at select retail stores like Checkers, Pick N Pay, Shoprite, and Boxer Stores.
End-of-Month Payments Explained
Sassa aims to ensure that the SRD grant is awarded only to deserving individuals each month. To achieve this, they conduct verification checks to ensure that all applicants meet the eligibility criteria for the SRD grant. These verification checks are typically completed towards the end of the month, hence the payments are scheduled for the end of the month.
Eligibility and Income Criteria
To qualify for the SRD grant, applicants must be South African citizens residing within the country’s borders. Permanent residents and special permit holders are also eligible. Importantly, grant beneficiaries cannot receive assistance from the South African government or any state entity, including benefits from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) or funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
Their bank account balance must not exceed R624, as “income” in the context of the SRD grant refers to the funds in the applicant’s bank account. If the balance surpasses R624, the R350 grant application will be rejected.

Sassa employs a comprehensive verification process to determine if applicants meet the SRD grant requirements. This process involves collaboration with various state entities, government departments, and banks. Sassa verifies identity numbers and citizenship status in coordination with the Department of Home Affairs.
The applicant’s bank account details are shared with the Department of Treasury, subsequently forwarded to the chosen bank for income verification. It’s important to note that the timeframe for bank verification is not fixed. Once income verification is completed by the bank, the information is returned to the Department of Treasury and finally handed over to Sassa to facilitate the SRD grant payment.
