SRD Grant Extended But Why Remains Valued At R350

In May 2020, the Social Relief Distress grant was introduced for the first time. During the pandemic, this was the first large-scale social security program to be implemented.Since 2020, millions of unemployed individuals have received monthly Social Relief Distress (SRD) grants.During this year’s State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed the grant reaches approximately 7.8 million people.

SRD Grant Extended But Why Remains Valued At R350

Inflation has eroded the value of this grant, according to the Department of Social Development (DSD).At a time when the country is experiencing an increased cost-of-living crisis caused by rocketing food and fuel prices, households are being forced to make difficult choices.

In spite of this, Social Development appreciates that the grant has been extended to March 2024, but it will remain at R350 and it is a temporary grant.DSD Minister Lindiwe Zulu says no agreement has yet been reached on what will replace the grant when the temporary arrangement ends.

Lobby group, Black Sash, has been advocating that social grants increase at least at the inflation rate, with no grant below the Food Poverty Line.Currently, Social Development is exploring options to introduce a more sustainable permanent intervention designed to meet the needs of the working-age population.

What Are the Requirements for SRD Grants?
