Student Exploitation Investigation Updated by NSFAS

Student Exploitation Investigation Updated by NSFAS. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has released an update on its investigation into alarming reports of student exploitation by private landlords. This follows recent allegations that some landlords demanded sexual favors from students in exchange for accommodation.
Thekwini TVET College Denies Student Registration
NSFAS has confirmed that Thekwini TVET College denied the enrollment of the student mentioned in the initial report by Sunday World. As the student is not registered at the institution, it has become difficult for the bursary scheme to verify the claims or extend direct support to the alleged victim.
The lack of enrollment records has created hurdles in authenticating the case. However, NSFAS remains committed to addressing student safety concerns and ensuring that incidents of exploitation are properly investigated.
Students Encouraged to Report Incidents
NSFAS has urged any affected students to report cases of landlord misconduct to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and to share case numbers with the organization for further action. As of now, no formal complaints have been recorded regarding these allegations.
“We encourage any students who have experienced similar incidents to report the matter to SAPS and obtain a case number. Thereafter, students should report the violation to NSFAS via [email protected] so that appropriate interventions can be made.”
This proactive approach aims to ensure that students facing any form of exploitation receive the necessary support and intervention.
NSFAS to Take Action Against Guilty Landlords
NSFAS has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards exploitation, harassment, and gender-based violence. The organization has vowed to take strict action against landlords found guilty of misconduct.
If credible evidence emerges, NSFAS will not hesitate to blacklist offending landlords and revoke their NSFAS accreditation to prevent further exploitation of students.
Students who have faced similar incidents are strongly encouraged to:
- Report the case to SAPS and obtain a case number.
- Notify NSFAS via [email protected].
By taking these steps, students can help ensure that necessary interventions are implemented and that those responsible are held accountable.
Conclusion
NSFAS remains committed to protecting students from exploitation and ensuring that their accommodation arrangements are safe and secure. While investigations are ongoing, the organization is urging students to come forward with any evidence or personal experiences.
